Nausea by trimester

It is often most severe in the first trimester and then improves or disappears. Sometimes it returns in the third trimester.

When does morning sickness start?

Morning sickness usually begins around the 5th week of pregnancy, but can start earlier, between the 4th and 7th week. It is often the first sign of pregnancy. The nausea peaks around the 9th week and typically subsides after 12–18 weeks. Some women continue to suffer from it well beyond the 18th week, while others are completely spared.

Did you know?

Nausea is often the first sign of pregnancy. However, there is no connection with the sex of the child.

How long does morning sickness last?

Morning sickness usually begins around the 5th to 6th week, peaks around the 9th week, and subsides in most women (approx. 80-90%) by the end of the first trimester (approx. 12th-16th week). In some cases, however, nausea can last much longer, into the second trimester. In about 10% of women, it can even last throughout the entire pregnancy, requiring medical attention if it is severe (hyperemesis gravidarum).
